Cybercriminals are shifting from ransomware to cryptographic malware, Russian antivirus company Kaspersky Lab said.

According to a report by the company, ransomware attacks [a virus that blocks access to data until a demanded amount is paid] have started to decline significantly, while an increase in cryptographic malware has been noted.

This is because cryptocurrency mining is a more profitable activity than ransomware.

Kaspersky Lab says that ransomware attacks have decreased by 44.6 percent compared to a year ago, while cryptographic malware has increased by 44.5 percent. The security firm predicts that this trend will continue to grow, especially on mobile platforms, and that the report presented with concern the developments in China and India, where a third of the world’s phones are found.
